The Possibility Podcast With Mel Schwartz Episode 025: Relationship Resilience During Coronavirus Confinement

Even in the best of times, recurring relationship conflicts and frustrating communications can feel daunting. During the coronavirus pandemic confinement, these challenges can feel even more overwhelming. But as always, crisis creates – and often opens – the door to new opportunities.

The habitual default in the battle of right vs. wrong decimates relationships and destroys compassion, empathy and love. There is a way through this impasse, however. Mel shares a breakthrough that came to him in the midst of a couple’s session he was conducting that led him to what he calls The 5% Rule.

This technique allows us to slow down, listen and validate each other. In turn, we focus not on facts or argumentation but on feelings and perspectives. The 5% Rule enables the energy of conflict to subside and the opportunity for meaningful dialogue to ensue.

The Possibility Podcast Episode 006: Raising Resilient Children

Mel says, “As a culture we tend to focus on the achievement and success of our children but omit something far more important; their resilience.”

In this episode, Mel describes what he means by the word resilience, which he says is the source of our children’s well-being. He explains that the parenting rulebook — as we know it — fails us. Assisting our offspring to develop emotional intelligence is best accomplished by sharing more of our own life narrative, not just the good but our challenges as well.

Mel shares a compelling narrative about his own son regarding grades and motivation, and has a call-in from an educational counselor. He proposes that the intense pressure we put on children to perform academically at young ages is akin to unintentional child abuse. He highlights the path for nurturing your children to develop authentic self-esteem.

The Possibility Podcast Episode 002: Love Isn’t All You Need

In this second episode of the Possibility Podcast, Mel Schwartz explores the nature of love.

Unlike the Beatles song, “All You Need Is Love,” Mel explains that we need much more. We need to understand how to sustain love.

This episode explores the phenomenon of romantic love; how it begins and why it tends to wither.  Mel proposes that love and passion need not die, but that we are basically illiterate in knowing how to succeed in this venture. We were never schooled in emotional and verbal intimacy, but these can be easily learned.

This episode looks at the nature of communication and what is required to foster empathy and validation, the bedrock of Eros. As he says, “It’s easy to say I love you, but challenging to act lovingly when we really need to.”

For the first time on the podcast, Mel takes calls from two individuals in which he answers their questions regarding emotional reactivity and why we shouldn’t put our best foot forward in the early stages of relationship. In his conversations with his guests, Mel explains the nature of authenticity, which is essential for resilient relationships.
